Count every tread and riser separately, including different dimensions at winders or turns. Do not multiply one step until you confirm they match.
Plan and measure
Measure the tread depth from the front edge to the riser and the riser height vertically. Add the continuous path for the installation method planned.
Compare the practical options
Record the desired runner width and the exposed stair border on each side. Check that the border remains consistent through turns and landings.
Placement and proportion
Measure landings independently by length and width, and draw the direction in which the runner will travel. Photograph unusual transitions for the installer.
Material and care checks
Have the installer verify the final cutting length, padding, seaming and fixing method before production, especially for custom runners.
