Under the bed or beside it are different goals
A large rug under the bed creates one anchored composition; runners or smaller rugs at the sides create targeted floor coverage. Decide where feet land first thing in the morning before choosing a size.
Let the bed width set the visual balance
When a rug sits beneath the bed, enough should remain visible at the sides and foot to read as a deliberate layer. A rug that disappears almost completely under the bed wastes both pattern and proportion.
Use runners when the room is narrow
A pair of runners can work well where a broad area rug would crowd wardrobes or doors. They also make it easier to change color or pattern without moving the bed.
Round and oval rugs create secondary moments
A curved rug can define a reading chair, dressing area or open corner without competing with the bed’s rectangle. This is often more useful than forcing a small rectangle into an unrelated space.
Bed size alone does not determine rug size
Two rooms with the same bed can need different rugs because nightstands, benches, wardrobes and circulation change the visible floor area. Measure the complete furniture arrangement and decide which pieces, if any, should share the rug. A bench at the foot of the bed can require extra exposed length that a bed-only diagram will not show.
Orientation can change the result
Most under-bed rugs run with their longer dimension across the bed so useful area remains visible on both sides. In a long narrow room, however, another orientation or a pair of runners can preserve circulation better. Mark both options rather than assuming the conventional layout is automatically the best fit.
