Choose what the rug needs to connect
A living-room rug works best when it visually joins the sofa and chairs rather than floating under the coffee table alone. Decide whether the rug should sit under all legs or primarily the front legs, then measure that actual furniture footprint.
Use the exposed floor as a frame
A consistent border of visible flooring makes the layout feel intentional. In open-plan spaces, the rug can define the seating zone without building a wall around it.
Shape can solve awkward seating plans
Rectangles suit linear sofas; round or oval rugs can soften a compact conversation group; a square rug can support a balanced four-sided arrangement. Choose shape from the plan, then choose color and material.
If two seating zones share one room
Do not automatically repeat the same rug. Related colors or fibers can create continuity while different shapes distinguish functions. Keep enough visual connection that the room still feels composed.
The coffee table is not the sizing reference
