Record every tread, riser, landing and turn before choosing runner length; stair geometry cannot be reduced to one straight measurement.
Separate width from total run
First choose the finished runner width and the visible margin at each side. Then calculate the material path over treads and risers. These are different measurements and should not be combined into one estimate.
Do not assume every step is identical
Measure tread depth, riser height and stair width at multiple points. Winders, landings, bullnose steps and changes in width need their own measurements rather than being averaged away.
Add planning allowance before ordering
Installation method, pattern repeat and turns can require additional length. Share the full stair measurements with the installer or maker rather than ordering only the mathematical minimum.
Treat landings as separate geometry
A landing may need a turn, a joined piece or a different orientation. Draw the staircase from above and note the direction of travel so the runner can be planned as a continuous visual line.
Use a stair vocabulary that the installer can verify
Record tread depth, riser height, stair width, number of steps, landing dimensions and any winders or curved steps as separate facts. Also note whether the first and last steps are different. A labelled sketch is more reliable than a single total length because it lets the installer see where the geometry changes.
Pattern repeat can change material planning
A directional stripe, border or repeating motif may need additional material so visual elements align across steps, landings or joins. The exact allowance depends on the design and installation method, so do not add a universal percentage. Provide the product/design information together with the measurements and let the installer or maker confirm the required quantity.
