Translate awkward room geometry into finished outside dimensions, orientation and a simple sketch that a maker can actually use.
Draw the floor plan first
Mark walls, doors, fixed cabinets, fireplaces, columns and the furniture the rug must relate to. A simple sketch prevents a custom dimension from solving one problem while creating another.
Measure the finished outside edge
For scalloped, round or oval designs, confirm whether the quoted dimensions refer to the outermost edge. Decorative borders can change the usable footprint.
Record clearances as well as rug size
Door swings, vents, floor transitions and chair movement can all reduce the practical maximum size. Put these constraints on the drawing.
Send units and orientation explicitly
State width × length, the measurement unit and which side runs in which direction. For a runner, identify the corridor or stair direction. For a round rug, give the finished diameter rather than two equal sides.
Create a dimensioned sketch, even for a simple rectangle
Write the finished desired length and width directly on a plan and mark orientation. Add doors, fixed furniture, cabinets, floor vents and any place where clearance is tight. A labelled sketch reduces the risk that two numbers are interpreted in the wrong direction.
Irregular spaces need reference points
For an L-shaped zone, landing or other non-standard footprint, record each straight segment and identify where the direction changes. Use diagonal checks where useful to confirm squareness. Do not assume a custom maker can infer an architectural shape from room length and width alone.
Confirm what “finished size” includes
For decorative borders or scalloped edges, measure to the outermost finished perimeter. If the design has fringe, ask whether the stated dimension includes or excludes it. The order should use the same convention as the product or maker so the requested size and final measurement refer to the same thing.
